What is an oversized item?
An oversized items is over 250 lbs. Many local and long-distance moves will include oversized items. Oversized items include armoires, wardrobe closets, solid wood furniture, high-end appliances, pool tables, hot tubs, customized furniture with extended backs, solid wood king size beds, large artwork, pianos, gun safes, large security safes, gym equipment, and other large or awkwardly sized items. Pianos
Pianos are heavy due to their cast iron frames, which are necessary to support the immense tension (around 18 tons) from the piano strings. Older pianos, particularly those from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, tend to be heavier. Upright pianos range from 200-1000 lbs., baby grands from 500-600 lbs., professional grands around 700 lbs., and concert grands up to 1200 lbs. Grand piano length is measured closed - from keyboard front to tail center. Piano measurements, including length for grands, are needed to ensure proper moving equipment and crew size. Gun Safes
Gun safes are heavy due to their thick steel walls, composite materials, double-walled construction, and fire-rated insulation. This weight is crucial for security, fire protection, and preventing theft. Safe weight varies greatly depending on size, steel gauge, fireproofing, and design, ranging from 20 lbs. for small handgun safes to over 5,000 lbs. for commercial models. Due to the weight and complexity of moving gun safes, we recommend using professional movers to securely move your gun safe. Safes
Safes, like gun safes, are heavy due to their steel walls, fire and/or cement insulation, and double walled construction. Personal or business safes are made to secure items, so safes are usually heavy – depending on the size and materials of the safe. The more steel that is used in the safe – the heavier it will be. Many safe makers will recommend 12-gauge steel at a min, and most go way up from there. We have moved smaller safes and much larger ones where we needed several movers to move it properly. The weight of safes runs between 200 to 5,000+ lbs., so having the correct number of movers (and proper materials and protection) is key to safe transit. Pool Tables
Pool tables are heavy due to the material and thickness of the playing surface. Some pool tables are wood, or slate and the entry level models may come with a MDF playing surface. If the playing area is slate – it will add several hundred pounds of weight to the pool table and if the playing surface is wood or MDF – it will be lighter but still very heavy. Many pool tables are ½ to 1 inch thick but higher end or professional grade pool tables may be up to 2 inches thick. Another factor that plays into moving a pool table is the size – most pool tables are between 6 and 9 feet but can range up to 12 feet! We suggest using professional movers to make sure your pool table arrives without damage to your new location. How to prepare oversized items for a move?
Please remove any items from cabinets, shelving, and drawers in your oversized items – especially small items that can fall through crevices in the item during transit. We know the little things usually matter most, so please secure those before we move your oversized items. To start the process, Omega Movers will wrap and protect your oversized items (based on the item and level of fragility to secure possible weak points). Once the item(s) are secure, we will load your oversized items with the appropriate number of movers, so the item is not damaged during the move. Depending on the item, we will use dollies, straps, or other methods to securely move your oversized item. Some items must be picked up at certain positioning – and that can also increase the number of movers needed to move the item. This is why we ask about oversized items during a moving quote – we want to make sure we prepared with the right team and materials.
